What to do if a Crown Falls Out
At Jim D. Lassiter DMD, we offer same-day crowns in Jay, FL. Same-day crowns are convenient, but they are also durable and reliable. When you get a dental crown from a qualified dentist, it will typically last a very long time. However, there may be some rare instances when a crown falls out. And, like most situations in life, it will probably happen when you least expect it, so it behooves you to know what to do.
Retrieve the Crown
First things first. You should retrieve the crown, because it’s possible that it can be repaired and reused. This will save you time and money when you get to the dentist’s office. It’s okay to handle the crown, since it will need to be cleaned and sanitized at the dentist’s office even if they can reuse it. Just be sure to place it in a safe container for transport back to the dentist when you have your appointment. (Avoid wrapping it in any kind of paper, because the paper could stick to the surface and make it harder to clean.)
Don’t Reinsert It
Another thing you should not do is attempt to place it back in your mouth. This could damage your teeth or gum tissue, making treatment more complicated when you have your dentist appointment.
Protect the Exposed Tooth
You may find that, without the crown in place, the underlying tooth is more sensitive. It’s certainly more vulnerable to bacteria and pain. The best course of action here is to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Hot or cold drinks could make the location painful, so opt for tepid beverages. If possible, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash after each meal.
When you see your Jay, FL dentist, your tooth can be restored with a new crown or possibly your old crown can be used. To book an appointment, please contact us.
